How We Met
It was truly unexpected for me to meet Ifeanyi. I had just moved to Atlanta, GA and was at a point in my life where I wanted to focus on myself and get adjusted to my new city. All of my friends and family knew that I didn’t care for blind dates. So, if they wanted me to meet someone, I told them to have them contact me via social media. That way, I can see his picture and decide if I wanted to respond or not. 😉 On August 4, 2014, I received a message from Ifeanyi who is a great friend of one of my bridesmaids. He saw a picture of me and my good friend, and thought I was beautiful. He seemed nice and was attractive, but I wasn’t in the mood to meet anyone new, so I said a few words to him to be cordial and moved on. Since then, he would reach out to me every couple of days, including my birthday, so I had a feeling that he was interested.
It wasn’t until he told me he was a University of Miami Hurricanes fan (my college’s rival) that I became intrigued. I ran track at Florida State University and love my alma mater, so why would anyone want to be a University of Miami fan? I clearly had to find out why. Since then, we continued to message each other back and forth and I was starting to like what I saw in his personality.
After a while, we decided to talk on the phone and our conversations then became even more heartfelt and meaningful. In November, while I was visiting family and friends in Houston, he arranged for us to meet at Fish and The Knife, a beautiful sushi restaurant and lounge.
Dinner was amazing and throughout the night I saw he had an amazing smile. After our first date, we traveled back and forth between Houston and Atlanta so that we could see each other at least twice a month. With every conversation and every visit, I saw myself falling more and more for this man. His words, his smile, his heart, and the way he looked at me, made me feel so special that I knew he was the one for me. That December, we had an amazing date at Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint in Atlanta, GA. With jazz music filling the air, he told me how special I was to him and how much I meant to him. He told me he has never met anyone like me before and could see himself spending the rest of his life with me. It was at that point that he truly touched my heart. I had this wonderful feeling within and right then, I knew I was in love.
Ifeanyi knows how much I love to travel and since I didn’t have the chance to vacation the year before, we decided to travel to the beautiful island of St. Maarten. We arrived on June 13th and had reservations at a stunning oceanside restaurant that evening. He had already told me before we traveled to pack a nice dress for the evening, so my anticipation was already high. Dinner that night was breathtaking, with a beautiful ambience, delicious food, and a talented pianist who captivated us with every song he played. I knew how much I loved Ifeanyi and throughout that night, I kept asking myself, “Is he going to ask?” “When is he going to ask?” “It would be so perfect if he did.” By the time we finished eating and nothing happened, I told myself, “maybe it won’t happen tonight or during this vacation. It’s okay. Just enjoy the rest of the week.” Ifeanyi then got up and told me he was going to request a song from the pianist.
Ifeanyi has done that before in the past and has no problem with us dancing in front of others. But this time, when he came back to our table, he sat down. I was confused. With heartfelt music filling the air, he told me, “I asked the pianist to play ‘Hello’ by Lionel Richie because you had me at hello from the first time we met. I always say that you’re my present and my future, but I’m going to be greedy because I want my future now.” He then got up and I broke into tears. He got down on one knee and opened the ring box which had a spotlight shining down on a gorgeous diamond ring. With tears running down my face, I kept shaking my head yes. I don’t think I ever heard him ask the question, “Will you marry me?” His lips moved, I said yes and after he put the beautiful ring on my finger, we were in full embrace. At that point, the Manager and our Waitress brought out two glasses of champagne with strawberries that were lit up by sparklers. He had the whole thing set up! From the US! I was wondering why the Manager was watching us all evening with a smile on his face. Ifeanyi was truly made for me and I am so blessed to spend the rest of my life with him.
