Shaun and Sonia fell in love when they were young! Over the years, their love grew, they became friends, best of friends and were totally inseparable. Shaun had a soft spot for Sonia when they were in high school, so he would pass sweet compliments to her whenever he sees her every morning. Of course, Sonia always looks forward to Shaun’s accolades and she makes sure their eyes met. Their dreams came true when they finally tied knot as husband and wife on 19th of June, 2015.
For the proposal, Shaun planned romantic one for Sonia to show the depth of his love to her. “The wedding was everything we imagined and more. I honestly felt like the queen on that day, and Shaun was on cloud 9 the whole time. Everyone had so much fun, which is exactly what we were trying to achieve”, says the excited bride.
Our Love Story
Shaun and I met at 16 years old in our grade 11 philosophy class, so yes, we are high school sweethearts. I can recall having to pass by his desk every day to get to my own desk. He would stop me, and tell me how nice I smelt, lol. We were together for 9 years before getting married at the age of 25. Shaun is my best friend. We have literally grown up together. Shaun proposed to me last year after returning from our trip to Italy. We were celebrating our 8 year anniversary with a nice dinner at one of our favorite spots and lovely hotel booked. We had checked into the hotel when Shaun handed me an envelope to read. When we were younger, Shaun used to write me poems and love letters all the time, but that gradually stopped over the years. In the envelope is a lovely written letter talking about our relationship over the years and how much he loved and cared for me. Of course I am balling like a baby after reading this letter. He then hands me my anniversary gift, which is in a big gift bag. I take all the tissue paper out of the bag only to find nothing in the bag. I turn to Shaun who had a panicked look on his face. Shaun then says to me “Please don’t tell me I forgot your gift at home”, as he started scrambling to look around the hotel. I then got up to try and help him look. Shaun then goes into his jacket pocket, while I am distracted, and pulls out a ring box. Best believe the tears started rolling again!
The Venue Serene
We wanted a very picturesque location i.e. beautiful gardens, with blossoming flowers and grand trees, and a beautiful lake, etc. For this reason, The Manor in Kettleby Ontario (Canada) was the best location for us. We had an outdoor ceremony by the gazebo and lake, followed by an outdoor cocktail hour service under the canopy. The reception was held indoors. The overall color scheme of the wedding was pale pink and ivory. My husband and I like a very classic look which is exactly what we went with for the wedding.
My Dress and Shoes Sparkle all Day
My dress was The Maggie Soterro Liv dress in ivory. The dress would be best described as a fit and flare gown made of Alecon lace. It has a strapless, sweetheart neckline and detachable bow belt. As mentioned above, I was aiming for more of a simplistic classic look, thus, although the detachable belt was beautiful, I opted not to wear it. My favorite part of the gown had to be the chapel length train, which definitely added the right amount of drama and wow factor. My shoes were Steve Madden. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the name of the shoe, but they were silver glittered throughout, and absolutely comfortable!
The Bridesmaids dresses were from David’s Bridal. The dresses are best described as a one shoulder, delicate chiffon dress with cascading accents on the bust area and a leg slit for added drama and sexiness. In keeping with the pale pink and ivory theme, the dresses were a pale pink color. I asked my bridesmaids to wear whatever shoes they liked as long as it was nude in color. The groom and groomsmen’s suits and accessories were from Sean John. The groom wore a 3 piece charcoal gray colored suit while the rest of the bridal party wore a 2 piece suit in the same color. Again in keeping with the color scheme, the groom wore a pale pink colored tie and his boutonniere matched the pink and white flowers in my bouquet. The groomsmen all wore pale pink paisley bow ties with matching pocket squares. The groom’s shoes were also from Steve Madden (this was all coincidence, ha-ha).
One aspect that really stood out for a lot of the guests was the changing into the Nigerian clothing and the “spraying” of the money. My husband is Canadian. If you look farther down the line his family is about polish and Belgian descent. It was very interesting and different for a lot of his family to see the Nigerian culture expressed in that way.
