A marriage proposal can be a very romantic event for couples if it is really planned well. Every lady wants a man to propose to them with a wow effect. If the proposal is effectively executed the man should be expecting a sure ‘yes’ from his lady.
A boy meets girl, the sparks are ignited and the rest is usually history…
I promised my cousin Habeeb, who lived in Kano then, but had his wedding in Lagos, that I would be at the naming of his firstborn. Apparently some people heard and they were going to hold me to my promise in the future.
March 7 2011 was the day we all heard the news that my cousin has been blessed with a baby boy. At that time work was pushing me to the south-south region of Nigeria. It was the perfect excuse not to attend the naming ceremony. There was no stopping Zainab, another cousin’s wife who was going to hold me to my word. Zainab Funsho called me and asked about my arrangements. My sly self was about to wriggle out when she reminded me of my promise.
I had to yield to her persistence because I had given my word. So we arranged to leave for Kano together. As events unfolded, I got to Kano and got talking with my cousin Habeeb (HF as we call him) after taking pictures with my soon to be named nephew. HF began to ask about what I was up to as per relationships… My answer was very lame. HF laughed and said “you know what? I will introduce you to someone – she is very nice and a good girl in total. I want you both to be friends and whatever happens from there let me know”.
So this lady i was supposed to meet was arriving in Kano the next day on March 13, 2011. As the cab pulled up in front of the house, I ran to meet with Zainab who had missed her flight with me the day before. And there she was… Elegant, beautiful and charming. I reached out to say hello but i suspected she was not having a good day. Her response was very emotionless. We pulled through the day without a word again till I left Kano on the 14th of March.
But something spectacular occurred at the naming. The presiding cleric stated that naming ceremonies are joyful events and also a platform for well wishers from far and wide to network and develop great relationships. The cleric prayed that single people at the event would find someone to be in a relationship with for the long term. Interestingly we both said a very loud “AMEN”
We got back to Lagos and my persistent sister in-law Zainab arranges for us to exchange BB PIN. Once we became contacts, she was interested in the fact that I wear medicated glasses (I didn’t have them on all through the weekend).
We started chatting and became really good friends. We started off by agreeing to meet at the movies… It felt like I had butterflies. Wait I had met this person before, we’ve been chatting for a week so why butterflies? Still can’t answer question till today. We had a lot to talk about and today we still talk about a lot. We started dating a month after we met.
From then till now, we’ve had our great moments, our low moments, initial clash with daddy in-law (we are best of pals now).
By november 2012, i was convinced beyond doubt that we were meant to be together. So I started the planning on how to get the ring. I had help from my Jewelry consultant, Folaseto Akin-Olugbade. Once we had agreed design, the next was how to get the ring size.
In a twisted tale of attending to me when I was ill, she forgot her fashion rings. It was an opportunity for me to get the ring size. I called my neighbor to help measure the ring and help bring it back before she came to check on me for that day. It was a close one though as my neighbor got in 5 mins before she did. Immediately we commissioned the making of the ring. Next stop was the magical proposal.
HF and I had begun hatching the plan for the proposal. We hit the studio and did the recording. The next task was now how to get her to the “event” . We agreed that Finesse Entertainment (HF’s Record Label) was unveiling a new artiste and we wanted support from family and friends at the Palms…
This magical day was the birthday of the baby that was born in 2011 March 7. We had planned all this and she was set to represent me at the Palms to support my cousin’s record label.
Getting her to the venue was a real suspense drama. She had to pull through a nasty traffic that day. Just at the last minute, she decided to go home to my cousin instead of the Palms. It was at that point my palms started getting sweaty. I began to cry foul to alert my cousin to change her decision to being at the Palms. It was tough, she had little to eat, she was there chatting me up and I was responding like I was back at the office, feeling her plight and displaying empathy.
Only if she knew.
So the trailers to the movies started and the trailer unveiling this new artiste came up, the rest is concluded in the video. The baby that connected us was 2 years on that day and we went in together to propose to Adewunmi.
Keep up with the rest of the story.
My best friend’s sister moved to Kano after she got married in 2010…fast forward march 7th 2011 we all got the good news of the arrival of their baby boy…lolade(bestie) wasn’t in town at that time,I would have naturally waited for her and gone together but I guess a higher power was at work(sic) and so that was how I found myself at the airport met up with a friend (Zainab) who also happens to be in the Funsho family(wife) we got on the flight and headed to Kano.
As we landed,I called Habeeb (baba ikoko) cos he promised to pick me up but he was held up so we ended up taking a cab to their house. On getting there, this young man approaches the car says hi to Zainab and as he approaches me my eyes first looks at his ‘ring finger’ I noticed he was wearing a band so I just tuned off assuming he was married. He says hello and I respond in a cold manner cos I didn’t want to be encouraging anything…
As the day progressed,I noticed him in the pool in the midst of about four or so girls all talking and all;I thought to myself and he’s supposed to be married (smh). It was time for dinner, one of the girls who had latched on to him came into the kitchen asking for food for him and I was ‘thinking can’t she see the band on his finger’ .
Next day was the day of the naming at the ceremony I remember the cleric talking about how goodnews begets goodnews and all the singles present would get their God ordained partners I remember saying a very loud AMEN that got everybody chuckling (he apparently said his AMEN as well).
Landing in lagos a few days later Zainab sends me a message on bb saying her ‘baba Oko’ likes me …I go Zainab I can see you don’t like me oo so it’s someone that’s married you want me to date?she then goes ahead to explain that the ring was decorative and he wasn’t married and then she gives him my pin,we got talking and the rest is history….
March 7,2013… Earlier in the week I got a bbm message from Habeeb saying they wanted to introduce a new artiste just signed on to their label (finesse entertainment) at genesis deluxe cinemas, lekki.
When I asked Ayotunde,he was very disinterested (or so I thought) saying he was going to be held up at work and all. I just concluded I might have to go myself on the day.
The morning of the 7th,he suggested not driving to the island but i should take a cab so he can pick me up after we are done at the cinemas,I didn’t want to because I always like to be in control of my movement and not be stranded but he managed to convince me to take a cab,on my way to the island,I was in traffic for about 2hours just to get from dolphin to ozumba I was cranky and pissed at this point…(knowing myself if I had driven I would have just turned around).
All the while I’m updating Ayotunde on my movements and venting he’s calming me down,I was supposed to meet up with the birthday boy’s mom at their house in lekki I called her as I got out of the traffic and Habeeb picks up saying she’s in the bath I tell him I’m almost in lekki and he says ok,just as the cab is going through the toll he rings back to say I should just head to the palms and I’m like uhh!!!
I ask the cab driver to turn around,I get to lekki meet up with Habeeb who says Tola (his wife) is on her way. We gisted for a bit while he was buying the tickets and all,I went to grab a salad and before I even start eating Habeeb calls to say they were starting so I pack up my salad and head up.
Entering the hall Habeeb says I should sit at the edge to reserve seats for Tola and other people we might know. Tola comes in with her mom and mom-in-law,all these appeared normal to me cos it was supposed to be a family thing(if only).
The credits for the movie starts,Tola is seated beside me we make small talk and then the finesse promo comes on and they’re all talking about this artiste bla bla and then honey comes on talking about an artiste and I say to Tola isn’t that the artiste they’re supposed to be unveiling talking about another artiste and she’s like she doesn’t know. At this point there was a camera with lights on in the hall and it started to move around i say to Tola who’s this one with camera in the cinema hall again. I just notice he’s suddenly focused on me and I’m thinking (abeg Siddon make I see wetin dem de show for screen jor) and then Ayotunde comes on the screen and I start screaming at this point I was thinking he was the artiste to be introduced until I kept quiet and listened to what he was saying and realized he was proposing I was really touched cos I knew a lot of planning must have gone into the whole thing…and then in he walks with Tomiwa and asks me to marry him I said yes of course…
He’s always said I would not know when he was going to propose cos each time we go on a trip or something my friends were always hinting that he might propose then but it just never happened so I guess I just stopped expecting it every time so I guess it worked…
Watch how Ayotunde captured Adewunmi’s heart in this lovely proposal video. Enjoy
